Sewer cleaning. While it may not be the most pleasant topic of conversation, it’s something that needs to be discussed. The main sewer line is a plumbing line that directs all of the waste that gets flushed down your sinks, showers, tubs, toilets, washing machines – any drain in your home – toward a public sewer system or septic system.

Clearly, the main sewer line serves a very important purpose, but like any other plumbing line, it can become clogged. Tree root infiltration and flushing bulky items or inorganic materials down your drains and toilets, such as fats, oils, grease, coffee grounds, napkins, paper towels, wipes, dental floss, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, etc., are among the most common causes of main sewer line clogs.

When a sewer line clogs, the pipe is blocked off and the water and waste that gets flushed down your toilets and drains have nowhere to go. This can lead to some serious problems. Having a clog corrected before it gets out of control can help you avoid disaster, which is why being aware of the signs of trouble are important. Whether it’s a clogged drain, your toilet draining slowly, your kitchen sink, your water heater, or any other plumbing problems, we’ve got you covered. We offer residential and commercial installations and services 24 hours a day. We’ve been highly recommended by Greenlawn home owners for over 10 years, for our unmatched customer service and financing options. If you’re experiencing any of the following, contact a reputable Suffolk County plumber in Greenlawn to schedule a sewer cleaning right away.

Clogged Toilets and Drains

A single clogged toilet or drain may not be a big deal; a single drain pipe may be clogged with hair, food waste, or soap scum, for example. Usually, these types of clogs can be corrected with a plunger or a snake. However, if several fixtures throughout your Greenlawn, NY home seem to be draining slower than usual, that’s a sign of a bigger problem. Often, when multiple toilets and drains or pipes are clogged, it’s an indication that the main sewer line is obstructed.

Foul Odors

If you notice an unpleasant odor coming from your drains or toilets, there are a number of issues that could be causing the problem; an accumulation of biofilm, a dried out P-trap (the U-shaped pipe under your sinks that collects water and prevents gases and odors from pouring out of the drain), a damaged or improperly installed vent pipe (which regulates air pressure in the plumbing system), or something as simple as a clog. However, the scent of raw sewage coming from your drains or toilets could also be a sign of a clog in your main sewer line and it needs to be addressed right away.

Strange Sounds

Gurgling sounds coming from your toilets and drains are one of the most easily detectable and earliest signs of a main sewer line blockage. When your plumbing and pipe system is functioning properly, wastewater flows freely through the pipes. If the sewer line is clogged, however, the wastewater can’t flow freely, which leads to air getting trapped in the pipes. That trapped air creates a gurgling sound when something is flushed down the pipes.

Changes to Your Lawn

For most Greenlawn, NY homes, sewer lines run from the home through the lawn and into the sewage system. Because of this setup, the signs of a main sewer line clog may be visible in your yard. For example, you may notice soggy areas in your lawn when it hasn’t rained or your sprinklers haven’t been running; or, you may see an indentation in the grass above the sewer line.

Backups

When the main sewer line is clogged, any wastewater that gets flushed down the drains or toilets can’t make its way into the sewer or septic system. As a result, instead of flushing down, the water will come back up. Typically, backups will occur in the lowest points first, which are usually shower or tub drains. When this happens, a sewer line clog is almost always the cause.

Originally known as Old Fields, it became known by the name Greenlawn with the coming of the Long Island Rail Road in 1870 or 1871. The LIRR chose the name Greenlawn for its station, apparently to project an idyllic rural/suburban image and foster resort travel to the beaches in . Greenlawn was well known for its pickle production during the 19th century as well as, to a lesser degree, potato and cabbage farms; the principal commodity, pickles, is still celebrated by the annual Pickle Festival, held by the local Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association at the John Gardiner Farm. The Gardiner family was the first to make a name for themselves as pickle farmers in the region but a former slave, Samuel Ballton, earned the moniker “The Pickle King” for becoming a prolific pickle farmer in Greenlawn in the early 1900s.
